Meet the breeder

I'm Barbara J., the breeder behind Johnson K9s located in Linwood, NC. I breed well-rounded German Shepherds for work and for responsible Pet companion homes. Dogs from our program can excel in a variety of fields, including search and rescue, the Police K9 program, protection, sports, and medical/service alert dogs. We keep in mind a variety of factors when breeding, including Drives, Temperament, Health and Structure. Our goal is to produce the "complete dog" that will be able to thrive wherever they are needed.

Q. & A. with Barbara

  • Why did you start breeding?

I been working and breeding the German Shepherds as my passion. Seeing a puppy to adulthood excel in training, knowing a clients' dog protected them from an intruder, knowing my dogs are on the street keeping crime down/ stopping bomb threats, to being amazing family members is very satisfying and self rewarding.
  • What makes your program special?

My dogs are picked first and foremost on what the dog 'brings to the table" meaning the dog is up to FCI, AKC, UKC breed standards, Do they pass our high standards of health? Do they have the temperament we look for? Do they have traits (drives) that will be beneficial and mix well with our breeding's? Then I look at pedigree to see if the dog matches the pedigree behind them. I believe that dogs should not be bred on pedigrees alone or the "hottest" dog of the moment. One most know there is no "prefect dog", there are shortcomings with every dog that is why it is important for me not to be "Kennel Blind". That is why I select each dog on what they bring and match them up with a dog that strengthen the weak and improves the offspring to be better and healthier.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies include plush and stock coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include sable, black, and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Johnson K9s was amazing to deal with. I couldn't have asked for a better experience than what we got at Johnson K9s. The puppies were as advertised and the process was smooth as can be. My wife and I have made new family members for life and I will stay in touch to provide regular updates. Thank you so much for everything!
