Meet the breeder

I'm John S., the breeder behind Laurel Hill located in Huntingtown, MD. We care deeply about Gordon Setters and have built that love and respect for the breed into every aspect of our program. We are dedicated to always having responsible policies when it comes to breeding, training, and rehoming our pups. We love what we do and truly want nothing more than to see each and every one of our puppies shine!

Q. & A. with John

  • Why did you start breeding?

As the breed’s numbers declined and bloodlines in the U.S. grew increasingly tight, we felt a responsibility to help preserve the Gordon Setter as a versatile, sustainable breed. That led us to import dogs from abroad to bring in new genetic diversity, stronger working ability, and structure that aligns with the breed standard and live as beloved family companions.
  • What makes your program special?

We raise our puppies in the house, using the smart puppy techniques. We are constantly with the puppies from birth until they go home playing, teaching and exposing them to new things. They are family members from the moment they are born and our puppy owners become part of that family. All of our owners still keep in touch.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Laurel Hill reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Gordon Setters.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • PRA, Rod-Cone Dysplasia 4 (rcd4), DNA Repository

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
