Legend Shepherds

Candee F.

Breeder of German Shepherds

Meet the breeder

I'm Candee F., the breeder behind Legend Shepherds located in Kennewick, WA. Over 30 years of breeding dogs that have met my health requirements—temperament, health, and structure are paramount. Welcome to Legend Shepherds! My name is Candee and I've been involved with German Shepherds since I bought my first one when I was 18 years old. Although he didn't turn out to be the show dog I wanted, I did fall in love with the breed and the passion to show german shepherds.

Q. & A. with Candee

  • Why did you start breeding?

Grew up around GSD's and love their intelligence, loyalty, and beauty. As I got older, I became involved with conformation showing and breeding structurally correct animals that can perform in all venues.
  • What makes your program special?

Everyone that knows me knows that I'm a health nut when it comes to the dogs having clearances (OFA, DM) and that I will only breed a dog if I feel it's temperament is close to perfect (as there is no perfect animal). I'm very picky and want to produce animals that will have wonderful, healthy lives.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Dentition, Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
