I'm Melanie H., the breeder behind Melanie's Basset Hounds located in Vinegar Bend, AL. Our dogs are bred for health and temperament with a major focus on conformation and quality. Our dogs will make a wonderful loving addition to your home. We also offer breeding rights for some puppies, once an application is filled out and approved.

Why did you start breeding?
Being a nurse, I had a desire to take care of people. When I started searching in my quest to get a basset puppy, I noticed there is a real need for breeders who are ethical, truly love dogs and want to provide healthy quality pets to people, while keeping the standards of the basset hound.What makes your program special?
Our program stands out because we don’t take shortcuts. Our puppies are the result of years of planning. Our dogs were chosen based on their outstanding bloodlines, wonderful temperament and their health. Even with all that, if they grow up and don’t possess superior traits to pass down, we retire them without breeding and they enjoy life here at our home, or occasionally, they may adopt out. When someone buys a puppy from South Alabama Bassets, I want them to be satisfied that they got exactly what they chose, a new family member that will give them many years of love and devotion and that meets the AKC standard for basset hounds.Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.
