Q. & A. with Melissa
Why did you start breeding?
I was always interested in breeding dogs. I received my first service dog after the military. She is a sable GSD. I fell in love with the breed ever since and began MK-K9 in 2018. I began my interest in working dogs in 2009 when I worked along side working dog teams in Afghanistan.
What makes your program special?
Our goal is to produce healthy and strong progeny, by using selective breeding. We are dedicated to producing traits such as, strong bones, solid nerves, strong prey and defense drives, and an overall healthy dog. I also attend college for Animal Science, focusing on animal breeding and maintenance. We also offer law enforcement and military discounts.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies include long and stock coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

OFA Hips: Excellent
OFA elbows: Normal
DNA: Tested
DM: Carrier (Not Affected)
Cali is the granddaughter of the famous and late Extreme Orex Aykmar. Cali is an imposing female, with a true heart for work. She has high prey drive, very firm and fast grips, and is a versatile female. She can switch from civil to sport with ease. She has high toy drive and absolutely loves to use her nose. She will work whenever and wherever. She works well with other handlers and shows no aggression towards other dogs and animals. She learns quickly and is eager to please her handler. She is very quick and keeps a nice working weight of 74 pounds. She is a larger working female. Her conformation is proper and she is a stock coat sable female. She is currently training in IGP and PSA. She will be getting her BH, once this litter is done. She has used a bite suit and for her first time showed no fear on the bite suit or sleeve. Cali is a force to be reckoned with. She will make a great female for mkk9shepherds breeding program and we are excited for her first litter!!!
MK-K9 L.L.C. reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Examination (rDVM, not registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Brucellosis, Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
