Meet the breeder

I'm Laurie H., the breeder behind Monarch Rhodesian Ridgebacks located in Chesapeake, VA. The focus for my breeding program is centered on planning a litter of pups based on temperament, intelligence, maintaining breed standards, and health. Qualities specific to Rhodesian Ridgebacks that are important to my breeding program include: conforming to height standards, weight, color, ridge details, intelligence, temperament, and health.

Q. & A. with Laurie

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have been part of a breeding program for the majority of my life working with horses, cattle, swine, chickens, mink, and dogs. I am a first time owner of a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I own two RRs, both female. My first RR named Fia is now 3.5 year old. Fia earned her therapy dog certification with Pet Partners when she was 12 months old. She visits patients in nursing homes and visits students in the local schools. Children enjoy Read-with-me and Walk-with-me programs with Fia also. She readily brings smiles to faces as she demonstrates her tricks for everyone. She also enjoys down time and loves to eat. Fia is the only RR in the world to hold a DMWYD Trick Dog Champion Title. She is the third Rhodesian Ridgeback to earn an AKC Trick Dog Elite Performer title. She holds a Therapy Dog title, (THDN) and also has her AKC CGC-A, CGC-U, and Coursing Ability Advanced Dog (CAA) titles. Fia earned her DMWYD Champion Trick titles at 17 months old and AKC Trick Dog Elite Performer title at 3 years old.
  • What makes your program special?

I only breed my dogs when I want a pup for myself and only when I can find an acceptable mate for the litter. There are various temperaments in RRs so choosing the best breeding pair is a very important decision. It is also important to evaluate puppies to determine their best fit with potential owners.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include rd whtn brn nose, wheaten, red wheaten, and rd whtn blk nose. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
