Meet the breeder

I'm Barbara L., the breeder behind Motley Acres Farm located in New Bethlehem, PA. We DNA health test from Wisdom Panel for their full screening. Every dog must pass and be 100% clear of all genetic disorders. We OFA and every dog must pass their hips, elbows and thyroid in order to be bred here at Motley acres Farm. some of the best are sent to the show ring and titled with AKC.

Q. & A. with Barbara

  • Why did you start breeding?

I wanted my first Irish setter to have a liter of puppies. I wanted a daughter of her because Pretty Penny was such a well behaved setter. So I found a nice male to breed her to and kept a female pup. Once I advertised them, people were taking two puppies at a time. I knew there was something to this breed.
  • What makes your program special?

Our puppies are very well socialized, they have a one year health guarantee, vaccinated, vet checked, micro-chipped. The parents all have their health testing and their CHIC number. some are AKC CH and IABCA CH parents.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are mahogany. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia (rDVM, not registered), Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia (rDVM, not registered)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, PRA, Irish Setter Type

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
