I'm Dana S., the breeder behind New World Barbado da Terceira located in Frederick, MD. We have 3 dogs that are our pets and whose puppies are socialized, nurtured, and loved! We breed dogs that are exemplary representations of the standard and will make a positive contribution to their line and to the families who love them. Why did you start breeding?
We discovered the breed during our 2018 vacation in the Azore Islands and brought home Pico da Casa dos Bravos. Concerned about the breed's risk of extinction, I returned to Lisbon later in 2018 for Rubin do Monte de Magos. In December 2021, my son Raffi and I picked up our third BDT, Lisbon (“Lizzie”) do Monte de Magos, a birthday gift from Gerry with the condition that three dogs is our limit.What makes your program special?
New World Barbado da Terceira was founded with a mission to protect, preserve, and responsibly develop the Barbado da Terceira breed. We are dedicated preservation breeders who value quality over quantity. Our breeding decisions are carefully selected from both U.S. and Portuguese lines to preserve essential breed characteristics while strengthening genetic diversity in the U.S.A. & Canada.Where do your breeding dogs live?

“The price includes Pennhip, elbow, heart, DNA testing of the parents AND the puppies, 1st shots, microchip and lifetime registration, and dewclaw removal. This cost also includes AKC registration. If the breeder is unable to provide a puppy to the prospective owner, the deposit will be refunded.”

About Lizzie
Meet Lizzie, one of the cutest Barba da Terceira you'll ever see! Born in Portugal, she comes from a long line of champion dogs. Lizzie is a real charmer. Her furry coat and playful personality make her a joy to be around. She loves hanging out with other dogs and always brings smiles and comfort wherever she goes. But Lizzie's not just a pretty face. She's also a valued member of our dog training team. Lizzie has a knack for helping dogs overcome their fear of each other. Lizzie knows what doggy signals to give to calm other dogs down and to let them know that she is not a threat. With her calming presence, she helps dogs build trust and confidence in other dogs. Even though she loves when her owners cuddle with her, she is wary of pets from strangers. If ignored, she eventually gets over her shyness and comes looking for some love. Whether she's cuddling with her owner or playing with her furry friends, Lizzie radiates joy. Her joyful nature and unwavering love make her an ambassador for the breed and a wonderful example of the amazing impact dogs can have on our lives. This is Lizzie’s third, and last, litter and she is an amazing mom!

About Rubin
Rubin’s favorite pastime is to cuddle with his owners. He also loves his girls, Pico and Lizzie. His favorite activity is to herd deer on his property. Rubin doesn’t like chasing a ball, but he does like chasing Pico when she chases the ball. He is a great licker and he leans in to be petted. He is also a wonderful watchdog and takes his work very seriously.

About Pico
For Pico, when she is with her owners and she is fetching balls, the world is good. It’s her job; it’s her passion! She enjoys being chased by Rubin. Pico was the first Barbado da Terceira to be brought to the U.S.A., the first to have puppies here, and the first winner of Best of Breed in the U.S. For all her hard work, she is now retired from breeding and enjoys the occasional “pup cup” from her local Starbucks.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Wisdom Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
