I'm Sarah S., the breeder behind North Roe Kennels located in Long Prairie, MN. We are blessed by having amazing mentors. They have taught us the importance of pedigree in determining where you want to go with your breeding program, always with the goal of improving the breed standards and making health and temperament a priority. We have spent hours and hours analyzing different pedigrees as well as those of our dogs. We want to breed dogs that have fabulous form and function and are better than what we have. They are pretty great!
Q. & A. with Sarah
Why did you start breeding?
We are blessed with amazing mentors who have taught us the importance of pedigree in determining where to go with our breeding program, always with the goal of improving the breed standards and making health and temperament priorities. We have spent hours analyzing pedigrees and want to breed dogs that have fabulous form and function, and are better than what we have.
What makes your program special?
We started our small family-run kennel in 2015 in Central MN. Sarah always wanted a Sheltie and Andy always wanted an English Setter, so we compromised and got both. Our dogs are spoiled members of the family who run our home, and health is always the top priority.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

North Roe Kennels reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for English Setters.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
OFA/CHIC DNA Repository
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
