Meet the breeder

I'm Mary R., the breeder behind Northern Bear Samoyeds located in Reinholds, PA. At Northern Bear we respect Samoyeds as one of the oldest dog breeds tracing back several thousand years in Europe. We believe we owe it to the breed to be carefully selective of the qualities we choose to perpetuate this breed's outstanding temperament and appearance, and also to stay close to their roots . We prefer the bear-like appearance of European lines.

Q. & A. with Mary

  • Why did you start breeding?

From the first time I ever saw a picture of a Samoyed I knew that would be my dog if I ever had one. I started breeding around 2016, and I am even more convinced than I was initially that there couldn't be anything like a Samoyed.
  • What makes your program special?

We breed on a small scale. We prefer the European lines with a bear face. Our highest priority is always the health of our lines. Besides the genetic testing and OFA or PennHip, we consider it necessary to consider what they were used to in the wild, instead of relying solely on kibble ,no matter the quality.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Getting a puppy from Mary

Mary has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Mary partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 6 weeks old.

“We are passionate about finding the right homes for our puppies and we reserve the right to match the puppies with the families. This is usually accomplished by 6 or 7 weeks of age after we have had opportunity to send pictures and videos and share about personality and hear from each person .”

Price

Puppy prices include a $800 refundable deposit that secures a spot in a litter. The remaining $4,100 - $4,500 is due before pickup, plus applicable taxes and fees.

“A deposit is of necessity non-refundable ... I need to know that those on the wait list have made a careful, informed decision and are committed. This does not mean that I never make exceptions.”

Contract & health guarantee

Mary may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Mary offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don't hesitate to reach out to Mary directly.

What first attracted me to Mary, the breeder/owner of Mt Laurel Samoyeds, was the beauty of her 2 samoyeds. Radzha and Kaya are 2 of the most beautiful Samoyeds I have ever seen. Then after putting down a deposit for a puppy, we got frequent pics and updates on Kayas pregnancy, including pics of the growing mamma. Once the puppies were born, Mary sent frequent and very detailed updates on everyone's progress, including mamma Kaya. At about 4 weeks old Mary then started sending pics, videos, and detailed characteristic traits about each puppy. She was in constant contact with us throughout the puppies 8 weeks with her. On the day of pick up, we were welcomed in and got to meet, mamma, and poppa and the litter. It was one of the best puppy adoption experiences I have ever had. And our puppy....she is the most beautiful little fur baby. Her hair is the softest I have ever felt on a Samoyed. Her personality is loving, snuggler, but with so much spirit and toughness about her!! She and our 1 yo male Samoyed are already inseparable and love each other so much. He doesn't leave her side. And she is absolutely stunning!!! I couldn't be happier!! Thank you so so so much Mary, for all that you have given us and to Kaya and Radzha for sharing your beautiful baby girl with us. Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
