Meet the breeder

I'm Erin S., the breeder behind OakSahara located in Visalia, CA. We are a hobby show breeder located in Central California. We breed very sparingly not even having a litter every year. We think this breed is the best of the best and only breed to continue it for the future so that people can continue to enjoy it as long as there are dogs. It's painful to have to deal with health problems or the premature death of a beloved pet. We have dealt with it more than our fair share in the past. That's why we are active in health testing and pursuing avenues for further testing in the breed as health issues come up. Nothing hurts worse than realizing that a dog is not a good fit for your lifestyle. We work with prospective pet parents to fit their puppy to their lifestyle. This means that there won't always be a puppy in a given litter for you, but we are active in the breed and might be able to match you with another breeder who might. In the end bringing home a new pet is a huge source of joy and responsibility and we want to share this and be a part of all of our puppies future families.

Q. & A. with Erin

  • Why did you start breeding?

I found this amazing breed and couldn't imagine it not being a part of the rest of my life. I hope to share that joy with others. It's truly an amazing bond.
  • What makes your program special?

I take a "maternity leave" off from work to do the full puppy culture protocol and to train and work with each individual puppy to their new life. I want pet parents to receive a puppy ready to easily acclimate to their home environment whether that means show, sports or a great pet.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Excellent level

OakSahara reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for American Hairless Terriers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA), Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Primary Lens Luxation (PLL)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Erin was so incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. Her love and care for the AHT breed and each puppy placement was genuinely thoughtful - you can tell she really loves this breed! She has been quick to respond to questions, she provided an AMAZING care package for the pup upon pickup, and overall I can't imagine a better experience than the one I had with Erin & OakSahara.
