I'm Melia H., the breeder behind Quail Creek Kennels GSD located in Hico, TX. I started my German Shepherd obsession in Kansas 20 years ago. I fell in love with my now-husband and the wonderful state of Texas that my crew now call home. We have a beautiful custom made kennel that my husband built that sits on our remote 23 acres. Big things come from small packages and we place so much pride in our GSD family resulting in you having the biggest present.
Q. & A. with Melia
Why did you start breeding?
I purchased my very first working showline about 20 years ago. He and my first Schutzhund club taught me a lot. After that, I acquired my first WGSL male and his devotion and coloring got me so addicted to this breed. Anywhere I went he made heads turn—he enjoyed the attention! He was what everybody wanted and needed in their homes.
What makes your program special?
I put over 100 percent of my passion into the upcoming litters. It starts with planning the outcome, to coloring and standards. I nurture my females all through their pregnancy. Each pup gets one-on-one attention in handling and progress noting. I stand behind my dogs and their health and have been resourceful to my clients after the pup has left.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Parent health testing
Breeder-Reported Testing
Great level
Quail Creek Kennels GSD reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
