  • Why did you start breeding?

    I fell in love with Basset Hounds at eight years old—the long ears, soulful eyes, and charm stole my heart. I knew I’d have one someday. And I did. Breeding isn’t just a passion—it’s a promise. My puppies are raised in my home with love, not in kennels. I focus on health, structure, and temperament. When you choose Royal Baez Bassets, you’re not just getting a dog—you’re gaining family.

    What makes Royal Baez Bassets special is our commitment to health, structure, and honesty. Our dogs are home-raised, fully health tested, and never bred before age two. We retire by five, socialize daily, and stay connected for life. Nothing is hidden. Nothing is rushed. We don’t compromise our standards—ever.

  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

    Our puppies include black and white, blue and white, white black and red, tan and white, black tan and white, red and white, mahogany and white, and lemon and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.

  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Melissa

Melissa has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

After buyers complete the application and screening process, Melissa partners with them to find the best puppy match.

“We carefully match each puppy to the right home based on temperament, lifestyle, and family needs. Puppies are evaluated as they grow, and final placement decisions are made once personalities are clear. Our priority is long-term success, not first-come selection. Buyers are screened and approved to ensure the best fit for both puppy and family.”

Price

Puppy prices include a $400 non-refundable deposit and between $1,600 - $2,600 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“Puppies are priced $2,500–$3,000, based on structure and markings. Price is non-negotiable and due in full at pickup. Puppies come with AKC Limited Registration. A contract is emailed after deposit. A $400 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a puppy. It applies to the final price and secures your pick order. If you do not move forward, the deposit is forfeited.”

This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase.     Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

    Being a Basset mom is truly a blessing. And that happens to go double for me! A year ago, I was in the midst of an extended search for two Basset pups to welcome home. In that moment when the pics of two particular pups on Melissa’s breeder page caught my eye, I knew I had arrived in the right place at the right time. A quick inquiry on my part and an almost instant reply back from Melissa led to a phone call in which she provided lots of details and personal anecdotes about the two pups who had stolen my heart in an instant. Melissa’s generous insights into their individual personalities and interactions only served to confirm for me that not only had I found ‘my girls’, but that I had found a breeder in whom I could place my complete trust and confidence. From that conversation, and over the course of the many texts, pics and ’pupdates’ that followed right up until the day arrived that I could finally bring them home, it was clear to me how much Melissa cared about all of her puppies and their potential new homes, just as I believe she understood how much this opportunity to have ‘Judy’ and ‘Linda’ (their litter names) become a part of my family meant to me.
