Meet the breeder

I'm Paula S., the breeder behind Ryanhaus Kennel located in Salisbury, MA. I decided that these are the two best breeds ever! One, the German Shepherd Dog can be serious and watchful, and the Labrador Retriever is more submissive and comical, yet also very loyal! My love for the Shepherd started when my dad brought home a GSD puppy, he grew to be my best friend and protector. My love for the labrador Retrievers came later, when I acquired a black lab pup from a lady that had a beautiful litter of 8. I wanted to learn about hunting dogs and their retrieving abilities. I have learned so much about dog behavior over the years, and also what health tests each breed should have. I love being surrounded by such beautiful well behaved dogs!

Q. & A. with Paula

  • Why did you start breeding?

I started researching labrador retriever pedigrees, along with German Shepherd Dog pedigrees. Then I attended Dog shows and joined the labrador retriever club of greater Boston, and the German Shepherd dog club of southern New Hampshire. That way I was able to learn about upcoming shows and events like herding and hunting dog tests, I also learned about specific health tests required for each breed.
  • What makes your program special?

We are on our eighth generation breeding German Shepherd Dogs and Labrador Retrievers, along with maintaining health testing throughout the generations.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our German Shepherd puppies include stock and long coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our German Shepherd puppies include sable, black, black and red, and bi-color. Labrador Retriever puppies include black and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Excellent level

Ryanhaus Kennel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Temperament Test, Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
