Meet the breeder

I'm Tammy g., the breeder behind Sapphire Eyes Sheepdogs located in Sutherlin, OR. We are an in-home breeding program where we prioritize giving each dog and puppy the best care that we can. All of our dogs are health tested and certified; never kenneled. We cherish all of our animals and enjoy sharing the love of an Old English Sheepdog with other individuals and families!

Q. & A. with Tammy

  • Why did you start breeding?

We got our first sheepdog in 2013 and immediately fell in love with the breed. Blue is our old man and our inspiration for Sapphire Eyes. He was great with our four kids and all of our livestock. We just loved him so much that we quickly decided that we needed to put more of these wonderful dogs in this world!
  • What makes your program special?

We are continually impressed with the natural farming talents of our dogs, so we like to say we breed for farm and family. This means that we breed big strong dogs with a fine herding instinct and a protective nature. We believe that dogs need their tails for balance and for wagging, so we do not dock the tails of our puppies. We like to say our puppies are all natural and free range!
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Cerebellar Degeneration, Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
