Meet the breeder

I'm Maren C., the breeder behind Saxafrax Borzoi located in Boring, OR. NOTE: We will only place puppies within a 1 day's drive of Northern WA or Northern OR. We strive to preserve the borzoi breed for future generations to admire, live with, and love. We believe preservation requires equal emphasis on the dogs we produce AND the people who love them. We are passionate about connecting the families of our puppies with support through ourselves and the wider sighthound community. In order to achieve preservation goals in our breeding program, we believe it is essential that each breeding: preserve genetic diversity by holding onto rare lines and haplotypes; preserve breed function & form by utilizing dogs with proven coursing ability and conformation ring success; preserve correct, stable & family-safe temperaments, utilizing a blended Puppy Culture & Avidog helping & raising program; preserve overall health and longevity through health testing and pedigree research.

Q. & A. with Maren

  • Why did you start breeding?

In the summer of 2019, our friend and mentor Jan Leikam (Adrienne Borzoi) approached us about pairing Maren's boy, Shaniko, with Jan's bitch, Allee. We (Elyse & Maren) had dreamed about one day breeding dogs together, but that vision was always an uncertain "some day". One of the most daunting things about our first litter was choosing the right pairing, and when Jan offered one to us, and was willing to sign on as co-breeder alongside another friend/mentor, Monica Barry (Hounds of Laureate), we decided to take the leap, saying "what will be, will be." On October 12, 2019, our Que Sera Sera litter was born, ushering us into breederhood. The litter was whelped and raised at Elyse's residence, and spent ages 8-12 weeks at Maren's, as we developed our two-pronged approach to sharing the load of raising healthy, well-socialized puppies.
  • What makes your program special?

We raise our puppies with a blended approach informed by Puppy Culture and Avidog. Our 10-week-old temperament evaluations are performed by board-certified veterinary behaviorists. The socialization experiences afforded by our dual-raising setup allow our puppies to be safely exposed to both rural and urban environments to make the most out of their critical socialization window. Puppies are crate trained, leash trained, comfortable riding in cars, and have been raised around cats, other dog breeds, goats, and people of all ages by the time they go to their new homes.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
