I'm Beth S., the breeder behind Schonwasser Shepherds located in Surprise, AZ. We train for IGP and show at Sieger shows to prove the intellect, temperament, and beauty of our dogs. Our dogs are West German Long Coat Black & Red from the Kirschental lines. We work to maintain the German standards of health, intellect, trainability, and temperament. All OFA and DM tested.
Q. & A. with Beth
Why did you start breeding?
My son expressed a wish for a puppy out of my first import male. I realized then genuine German dogs were hard to find and expensive. I connected with a few other "German" breeders and had my first litter in 2012. Since then, about HALF of my offspring are "working" in some capacity.
What makes your program special?
I have only one litter per year and my dogs are known for their intelligence, trainability, and health. HALF my offspring (about 30 puppies in 10 years) are now working dogs, but all are beloved family members. My dogs are in Search & Rescue, PTSD Service Dogs, Therapy, IGP training, and two are police K9's in Florida Law Enforcement. I am a hands-on breeder who does early training with pups.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies have long coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are black and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Schonwasser Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
