Secret Garden Borzois

Mary R.

Breeder of Borzois

Meet the breeder

I'm Mary R., the breeder behind Secret Garden Borzois located in Northfield, VT. We are a small but extremely select breeder of absolute top shelf Borzois. We are a breeder of multiple National #1 Borzois, multiple National #1 Top producers, two #1 All-Breeds in Japan, multiple AKC and FCI Best-in-Show winners, International Champions, a World Winner, and a National #1 Novice A Hound. Our dogs have superb temperaments.

Q. & A. with Mary

  • Why did you start breeding?

Slowly. Very slowly. I read books, went to dogs shows, and visited breeders for 10 years prior to getting my foundation bitch. That preparatory period was the only way that I could participate at the time because my daughter and my work were my priorities. But that early restraint paid off handsomely because there were no false starts. I hit the ground running from my first litter.
  • What makes your program special?

My foundation bitch became the #1 Top-Producing Bitch in the breed in 1994. But her offspring weren't merely Champions. She had three offspring in the National Top Ten at the same time, two Best-in-Show winning #1 sons, one went on to #1 All Breeds in Japan, and sired a Best-in-Show winning #1 All Breeds in Japan. Three of her offspring also became #1 Top Producers. We offer exquisite type, movement, and health.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • OFA/CHIC DNA Repository, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
