Meet the breeder

I'm Carissa J., the breeder behind Selenite Mudi located in Locust Grove, VA. We are a dedicated Mudi breeding program focused on producing healthy, well-tempered dogs that adhere closely to the breed standard in structure, type, and working ability. Our Mudis are raised in our home as valued family members, while also being active in conformation and performance sports. Health is a top priority in our program, and all breeding dogs complete appropriate health testing and are evaluated through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Through careful selection and with the breed standard in mind, we strive to produce stable and versatile dogs that will thrive with the home matched to them.

Q. & A. with Carissa

  • Why did you start breeding?

Breeding was never in my original plans when getting into the breed, and my first two Mudis were not breeding candidates. By the time I got Rhea, my third Mudi, I knew she was truly special and could be such an asset to the breed. It has become a personal goal of mine to work towards improving the breed as a whole and under careful planning and guidance of my mentor, I started Selenite Mudi.
  • What makes your program special?

We take it a step further than many breeders by proving our dogs in both show and sport, and by exceeding the basic recommended health testing for our breed through OFA. We adhere our breeding ethics to a high standard and do not breed dogs who do not meet the breed standard or dogs who would not benefit the small gene pool of this uncommon breed. We do NOT breed for color.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Spine (OFA, FCI), Dentition, Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Full Embark Panel, DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
