Meet the breeder

I'm Leah S., the breeder behind Silver Starr Shepherds located in Durango, CO.

Q. & A. with Leah

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have rescued or adopted several german shepherds. After dealing with many health issues including bad allergies, DM, and behavioral issues I wanted to get a puppy from a breeder. I found one I liked. Instead of a puppy I took home an adult female to co-own and mentor with. I wanted to contribute to healthy specimens with great temperaments. I end up training with 3 different mentors over the course of 3 years.
  • What makes your program special?

I try to create all the coat colors while keeping good temperaments and constantly working on confirmation and health. There is no DM in my program and I will only breed hips of good or excellent ratting in OFA
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have long coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include sable, black, black and silver, black and red, and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Silver Starr Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
