I'm Heidi E., the breeder behind Sonnenfeld Shepherds located in Grand Junction, CO. We breed exquisite black and red German Shepherds from world class Sieger lines. We never go a day without a Shepherd by our side — whether we’re hiking, parenting, or simply living life. They’re part of our rhythm, our joy, and our sense of home. Why did you start breeding?
I’ve been working with dogs for over 25 years, I've been passionate about raising German Shepherds since 2014. I’ve seen how brilliant they are...how they bond, protect, and bring so much joy to families. That’s why I’m passionate about breeding healthy, emotionally-stable German Shepherds from proven Sieger lines. I'm confident you'll adore one of our loyal companions for many years to come.What makes your program special?
Our German Shepherds are with us through every big and small moment. They snuggle with toddlers, hike the trails, and sleep on my bed. Our puppies grow up in the same loving environment. From day one, we nurture and care for them using the gold standard in early socialization. Heidi has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready to reach out, feel free to ask any questions about the breed, their program, or specific puppies.

Litter update on 30 Nov. •…Our 8 puppies—2 boys and 6 girls—are 2 weeks old and already showing thoughtful, resilient little personalities. This is a clever, adaptable litter. Age-appropriate challenges and new scents are helping them think through new situations before they act. While they universally rejected organic vinegar, they curiously interacted with vanilla and their sire, Cooper! It was fascinating to see them wrestle with the unfamiliar and decide what's worth sniffing. To be so little yet discern and problem solve is something that will serve their families well. Mama Ruby continues to shine as a confident, loving, and attentive mother. She's been great with letting close friends of ours meet the pups and with nurturing all 8 of them so well. Sometimes she'll rest near the whelping box, and that motivates the pups to practice walking, sitting, standing etc. Each day, their personalities unfold a little more. Some are calm and steady, others bold and curious. All are engaging, thoughtful, and perfect for families who want the best... and get it. 😍 If you want the joy of a German Shepherd, apply with us. Litter update on 24 Nov. •…Our litter is officially one week old, and everyone is thriving. The puppies are gaining beautifully, sleeping in warm little piles, and already showing the strong bone, rich pigment, and calm, steady temperaments these lines are known for. Their coats are thickening, bellies are round, and they’ve settled into a predictable rhythm: nurse, sleep, repeat. Mom is doing an excellent job, constantly cleaning and nurturing them as they need. Dad is meticulous about smelling them and is always present when I weigh them day and night. This is the stage where I get to watch structure and temperament hints start to emerge, and so far everything is exactly what I hoped for. Families who choose one of these puppies can expect a beautiful West German Show Line companion with a stable, confident nature. Puppies can go home January 10. A few reservation spots remain. If you’ve been watching this litter and are considering bringing one home, now is a perfect time to reach out and get on the waitlist before selections begin.

Litter update on 01 Sept. •…What makes a champion? Sieger judges spend years learning to spot the very best in working ability, temperament, and beauty. Cooper comes from these lines and shows the balance and elegance we look for in our breeding program. He is clear when he alerts, confident when he works, and warm when he’s with family. I felt completely comfortable cozying up to him right away. Cooper knows when to work and when to play. He protects when needed and loves our little ones so well. This is the kind of temperament and balance that makes a real champion. Cooper is exactly the male we want carrying these traits forward. Litter update on 01 Sept. •…Welcome to the family, Cooper! We're so excited to introduce you to Cooper. He comes from the #1 German Shepherd kennel of 2024, with SV hips/elbows, PennHIP, DM, eyes, thyroid, Embark and cardiac clearances all completed. While Cooper loves our family, he is a fierce and confident protector. His low and powerful bark commands respect. This comes from his lineage which produced some of the top IPO trained protection dogs in the world. Cooper makes it look easy being the perfect protector and gentle giant. He understands what's important and is very loving toward our kids ages 2-8 (and their friends). He loves to rest his Teddy Bear-like head on top of my feet each day while I work. We can't imagine a more exciting pairing between Cooper and Ruby for this fall. You won't find this level of quality, care, love and attention anywhere!

Litter update on 06 June •…Gotcha Day for "Josie" - I loved getting to know Kelley and her husband John as we raised this litter of puppies. They picked Josie without hesitation and now it's time to hand over the reins and let this new family experience the joy Josie brought to our lives. Congratulations Kelley and John. Litter update on 28 May •…🐾 Why does a mama dog correct a puppy who’s just trying to be sweet? 🐾 It’s one of the most misunderstood (but fascinating!) aspects of raising puppies. Even when a pup seems submissive or “just being good,” a dam might give a quick correction like a gentle growl, muzzle grab, or body block. Moms do this to teach boundaries, impulse control, and safe social interactions. 🧠 Research shows that puppies who receive consistent maternal corrections develop into calmer, more confident adults. The dam’s guidance helps shape the puppies’ understanding of what's ok in the pack. Even the sweetest pup needs to learn how to read social cues, and mom is their first and best teacher. 🐶💫 Have you ever watched a mother dog in action? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Litter update on 28 May •…🐾✨ Ever wonder why some mama dogs take their time weaning their pups? ✨🐾 Surely nature guides mothers to do what's best. A mother's natural instincts are shaped by her hormones, environment, and even the puppies’ own insistence to nurse. Sometimes, a dam will wait to wean because she’s feeling especially bonded, or her pups are extra insistent. It’s a delicate dance of nature and nurture! We've found Ruby tapers gently and encourages their independence. Pups will also nurse for comfort and she will provide that in between our snuggles. I'm careful to respect her natural rhythms while gently guiding the litter toward solid food. It’s fascinating to see how nature and nurture guide this pure experience 💕

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
