I'm Rachel H., the breeder behind Sonnengold German Shepherds located in Lenexa, KS. My goal is to produce balanced, athletic, driven dogs that excel in IGP and other working venues and as companions. We train and title our own dogs and often compete in IGP championships. Our dogs are health tested for hips, elbows, and LTV. All our puppies are registered with the AKC.
Q. & A. with Rachel
Why did you start breeding?
I had always admired the German Shepherd breed, but I never thought that I would have the opportunity to own a dog like him. He is my ideal German Shepherd: intelligent, driven, beautiful, stable, and full of heart. If I hadn’t started with such an incredible animal to share the field with, I know I wouldn’t have fell in love with the sport of IGP and the breed as much as I have.
What makes your program special?
I strive to produce balanced dogs that can both do well on a trial field but also fit happily into day-to-day life. I live and train with all my dogs. I attempt to combine the conformation and working ability of my dogs, and aim to breed in strong nerves and resilient temperaments lacking in so many modern German Shepherds.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies have stock coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Sonnengold German Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
