I'm Holly H., the breeder behind Steens Mountain Setters located in Burns, OR. On the rare occasion that I produce a litter of pups, breedings will be based on my desire to pass on traits of two individuals that I believe will likely produce setters that will be excellent bird dogs, have potential to be top competitors in horseback field trials, and other valued traits.
Q. & A. with Holly
Why did you start breeding?
To date, I have only bred one litter. In the words of my breeding mentor, “I am not interested in producing puppies. I am interested in producing champions.” I only plan to breed to produce pups by two dogs I have confidence will contribute to that goal.
What makes your program special?
I only breed for myself. The decision to breed is based on personal observation of the performance of both sire and dam, extensive pedigree research, and evaluation of both parents for traits I consider important characteristics of the breed (disposition, conformation, mental stability, and overall health).
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.
