Q. & A. with Sharon

  • Why did you start breeding?

30 years ago, I owned and operated a small pet supply and grooming business. I saw many German Shepherds, and too many of them had health problems, some of them disabling. At the time, I had a rescue German Shepherd and she had severe hip dysplasia. I began to have an interest in doing my part to bring health and balance back into the breed. A few years later, I added a male puppy to my family. As he grew, I could see that he would have the potential to be a breeding dog. I did his health clearances and began to look for a female of equal quality. I did find my wonderful dog, Chloe, who was bred from the MONKS of NEW SKETE bloodlines. After she grew and had her health clearances done, Eli and Chloe blessed me with a litter and that began my breeding career!
  • What makes your program special?

We have only one or two litters per year. Our puppies are born in the kitchen and handled extensively daily. I believe this is critical with our breed. We do ENS with the babies at 3 days through 18 days. At 4 weeks of age the pups go out to the puppy yard and learn about the outside environment. Because of the early socializing with us and our family, the pups love people and bond easily with their new owners. Pups go for their first car ride, in crates with littermates, at 6 weeks. This allows them to acclimate to the motion of the car, while also experiencing the crate without fear. Crate training is critical for puppies and helps them be more able to transition to new homes.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies include plush, stock, and long coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies are black and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
