Meet the breeder

I'm Peter & Shelia S., the breeder behind Vom Eichenhain GSD's located in Bennington, VT. We are 100% (DDR) East German bloodlines, the old original stable tempermented and healthy working lines; Calmer, healthier; long living, best temperament focused right on their person and focused on pleasing you. Many of our dogs are service dogs, PTSD, and SAR dogs. Our East German pups are very easy to house train and bring into your lifestyle, far easier than other lines of German Shepherds, especially if you follow our protocol. Our clients report that their puppy never had an accident in the home, That their pup/dog from us is the best dog they ever had, we have many repeat buyers, 5 testimonials from 5 veterinarians that bought from us, and came back for a second pup, and many more testimonials that we can forward to you Once you experience the East German Shepherd Dog, the Original Working German Shepherd, you will never go back to other lines. There are vast differences between different lines of German Shepherds in the health, temperment longevity and the the stature. The East German (DDR) Shepherd has been bred since 1899 for an extraordinary temperament, intelligence, and stature and health. The DDR GSD is big boned, has a strong straight back, a square hipline and a big blocky head. This is the original Working German Shepherd dog. Our East German Shepherds have many legendary dogs in their lineage. All of our DDR GSDs are imported or their parents are imported from the former East Germany. The East German is a longer living and healthier living German Shepherd. Mom and Sire and Grandparents here and to die for! Back in the 1950s many in the US and in West Germany began breeding GSDs for show and color. It is said that by focusing primarily on showing and color, the other lines have sacrificed in health and temperament . In East Germany they continued breeding for specifically temperament, intelligence, health and longevity, because they needed good dogs to assist and be companions to their families. Unlike America and Czech, In East Germany, you were not allowed to breed a dog unless it passed strict health and temperament standards. There are only a few of us in America who are dedicated to raising and trying to preserve the 100% East German (DDR) Shepherd. Our breeding dogs are OFA Certified Hips as well as DM Cleared. We have the privilege of working very closely with other experienced, (lifelong/or generations of ) knowledgeable and ethical breeders across the USA and in Germany dedicated to creating the very best DDR GSDs and to preserve and continue this very special rare DDR lineage. The East German is focused right on you and are more laid back than other lines. They adapt to your lifestyle instead of the other way around. Our pups are easy to train and live with. Who will protect you if needed, but intuitively welcome your friends. Our dogs will assist you in your daily life. Our dogs help us every day. They learn each new job very quickly. In fact, they anticipate our needs before we ask. People who know German Shepherds buy our pups. Police buy our pups for companionship and protection for their children. Very respected veterinarians buy our pups. We have pups that are becoming certified therapy and assistance dogs. As well as seeing eye assistance dogs . These and many more documented testimonials available upon request. Some are included on this website. Often people buy a pup from us and are back later for a second. In our town where we have sold many pups people say that they can always tell our pups because the walk quietly beside their person. Our GSDs run, play and work together every day rain or shine and they All live with us in our home as a part of our family. Each pup leaves here with a Veterinarian signed health certificate. We give parvo/distemper 5 way puppy shot at 6 weeks and booster shot at 8 weeks .We also have an excellent preventive worming schedule for the pups. In addition, we give you 3 day health guarantee where you can return the pup for any reason for another pup or your money back, and a 12 month guarantee on their hips. All our dogs and pups live in our house and socialized with us. The pups are accustomed to household noises like the vacuum cleaner, hammering, kitchen noises, etc. We feed our dogs raw meat as well as very high quality kibble by Fromm, which we give you some of both to get started. All your AKC registration papers come with the pup, as well as photos of sire and dam and their lineage/pedigree copies, including copies of the parents German papers, Copies of parents/grandparents ( if available) OFA Certifications and DM Clearances, as well as a detailed health/vaccination history of your new pup. We also include other helpful extra information and things we have learned over the years such as where to get the least expensive stuff for your dog, including natural (non chemical) EFFECTIVE flea and tick shampoos, and More. We spend Time with you when you pick up your pup advising you on puppy training and answering any questions so you and pup have a great start! Also we love when our buyers stay in touch with photos and stories about wonderful their gsd pup is working out with their family/lifestyle, but we also always welcome any questions after taking your new puppy home, by phone or email. Please email us for more information or testimonials. We usually have waiting lists and our current puppies often spoken for before they are born. Deposits to hold a puppy are welcome and non refundable but will be rolled forward to future puppies as they become available. We and the clients chose their puppy in the order we receive deposits. We reserve the right to keep a puppy for our future to keep these very special and rare lines alive. We have no control of when females come into heat, how many pups are born or exact coloring etc in addition, a little about the history of the breed, and what makes our lines stand out from all the other German Shepherds GSDs became very popular in the 50's after Rin Tin Tin and the war. Being Americans, we bred for color, and neglected Temperament and Health. 99% of what everyone is breeding out there are show lines, Or a combination of Showline and working line which means too much drive/hard to live with. This includes Back yard breeders and many breeders who are breeding showline shepherds, or combining show lines with drivey working lines which means a very hyper dog. So many people are breeding without understanding what the different lines produce by breeding for the last 60 years for color, most everyone neglected Temperament and Health, the 2 most important qualities . So many people have been and are continuing to ruin this amazing breed. The akc will register dogs whether or not they have any health clearances, or good temperaments etc. Why take a Truly amazing Working dog and breed it for 60 years for show ie only for color? In the former East Germany, on the other side of The wall, They kept breeding for the right reasons which is for Temperament and health, Producing Stable Healthy Calm Huge Boned Straight back Long Living (East)German Shepherds But when the wall came down, show line breeders scooped up the East German Shepherds because they knew their lines were lacking, so now the 100% East German shepherd is extremely rare and special. We consider them an endangered species and they should be classified as their own breed. They are the Original German Shepherd. They are Calmer and far easier to live, Have the "Off button" , are focused right on their person, intuitively know when to protect you and when to welcome your friends, will work or play with you all day long but when you want to stop they will quietly lay at your feet This very amazing Temperament is why many of our dogs are therapy and or assistance dogs. All that being said, Bicolors, or black and red or black and tan, is extremely rare in 100% East German, as Showline breeders scooped almost all of them up and sadly bred them into showlines. When we learned of the rarity of Color in 100% East German, we searched very far and wide to find 100% East German bicolors,to build our lines with something very special, to try to save the very best of the best. East German (DDR) is the Original Working GSD 90% of whats being bred is American lines AKC Never required ANY health or temperament testing; which resulted in 60 years of breeding for color, no health testing required, the lines are riddled with genetic problems, including recessive genes you do NOT know what you are going to get! Not just Bad hips or elbows, DM, but many bizarre digestive issues, food allergies, and bizarre cancers. East Germany you were not allowed to breed unless all very strict health and tempermnt testing was done! So our lines, All the way back to the beginning of the breed, health and tempermnt had to be proven perfect before breeding. West German has Show lines and Working lines, the show lines have similar issues to Americas the west German Working lines are Drivey, good for Police or SAR but harder to live with Czech lines NO health testing was done until recently DDR ( East German is Healthier and longer living; 12-17 years instead of 8 to 12 years.

Q. & A. with Peter & Shelia

  • Why did you start breeding?

Our lives were dedicated to rescuing, we chanced upon this very rare original line of German shepherd and soon learned they are far calmer, healthier & more intelligent than other GSDs, then we learned the DDR GSD line is almost extinct and this magnificent subset of the breed needs to be preserved before too late
  • What makes your program special?

The East German line of Shepherds is very focused and loyal, in addition to being more laid back than other lines of German Shepherds. They adapt to your lifestyle rather than the other way around. Our puppies are easy to train and live with, able to protect you when needed, and intuitively welcome friends. Our dogs will assist you in daily life and will learn new jobs quickly.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black, black and tan, black and red, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
