I'm Joel M., the breeder behind Vom Grossen Himmel located in Colorado Springs, CO. Hello, thank you for visiting my page. I breed German Shepherds with a goal of maintaining work abilities, neutral dogs with excellent conformation. I have the strong belief of preserving the breed standard.
Q. & A. with Joel
Why did you start breeding?
I got into breeding to preserve the GSD breed. From what I have experienced while being in the breed for the past 10 years is that there is help needed in breeding to the SV standard. To me this is the highest quality of breeding. I have video and can prove my dogs work. We train weekly in order to improve and maintain the level of work we have achieved
What makes your program special?
My dogs are an integral part of my family and daily life. This creates the ideal environment for puppies. From birth, they grow in a secure, loving environment where they know that they matter to their family. I also have a extremely strict standard. I will not breed to a dog that I know I wouldn't want to own. I expect the work ability, temperament and correct structure for a GSD.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Vom Grossen Himmel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
