I'm Steve H., the breeder behind vom Hermes German Shepherds located in Baldwin, NY. My German Shepherd journey comes from a multigenerational family legacy. For over 20 years, I have bred and trained dogs that reached world-level competitions, earned international podiums, and served as police K9s. At vom Hermes, every dog is family and every breeding has purpose.

Why did you start breeding?
Breeding grew naturally from my years of living with and training German Shepherds. Working closely with so many dogs taught me how strongly genetics influence health, temperament, and working ability. I wanted to preserve the qualities I value in the breed and give each new generation an even stronger foundation than the last.
What makes your program special?
My experience as a professional trainer gives me a deeper understanding of temperament, genetics, and each puppy’s potential. Our dogs are proven in real work and sport, yet live in our home as family. Every breeding is carefully planned, every puppy is evaluated as an individual, and each placement is matched to the right home.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies include long and stock coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, bi-color, black and tan, and black and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Steve

Steve has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

After buyers complete the application and screening process, Steve partners with them to find the best puppy match.

Buyer preferences are always considered, but the best long term fit comes first. As an experienced trainer, I evaluate every puppy carefully and work closely with each family to select the dog most likely to thrive in their home.”

Price

Puppy prices include a $500 non-refundable deposit that secures a spot in a litter. The remaining $3,000 is due before pickup, plus applicable taxes and fees.

“The price includes the guarantee, AKC registration, first round of vaccinations, deworming, and puppy socializations. All of our puppies are the same price regardless of color or size. Includes registration and microchip.”

From the time we introduce puppy formula, we begin feeding each puppy individually. We hold and feed them one at a time, giving each puppy individual human interaction and helping build a positive connection with people from an early age. Once we introduce solid food, we continue giving them their own individual meals rather than having everyone eat from one bowl. This also allows us to monitor each puppy’s appetite and eating habits closely. We’ve found that this routine helps make the transition to a new home much easier. Our puppies are already comfortable eating independently, even when their littermates aren’t around, which can help prevent stress related loss of appetite during those first few days in their new homes. It’s a small part of our puppy raising program, but one that we believe makes a meaningful difference.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test, Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
