I'm Carie M., the breeder behind Vom Stevens Old Fashioned German Shepherds located in Winterport, ME. Vom Stevens Kennel was started in 1995. Our goal is to continue to improve and strengthen the German Shepherd breed. Our dogs are bred for health, temperament, loyalty, intelligence, solid minds, body and souls. We are dedicated to providing the most loyal family pet or working partner you will ever have. We prefer to stick to European working lines + only the Old style German Shepherd dog. You can see our terms and agreements on our website www.vomstevens.com and we have many many pictures and fun to show you on our FB page as well.
Q. & A. with Carie
Why did you start breeding?
I have had German Shepherds all of my life and about 25 years ago, we noticed the lack of care in many German Shepherd breeders. Angle was getting bad, less testing being done, and so many problems and inbreeding. We wanted to change this and help make the GSD what it was originally bred to do, look like, and be mentally + physically. We also noticed the dogs were scared of their own shadows. We want good nerve. Fearless, loyal protectors when we buy dogs. This is what lead us to our journey and continues today.
What makes your program special?
Our dogs are very versitile. They work here on the farm helping us herd the horses. They are part of our kid's programs and horse programs. We will only breed with dogs that are fully tested and cleared and we start early on with our dogs with temperament tests and make sure they are well socialized. They love to work and love to learn.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies include plush, stock, and long coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, black and tan, black and red, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
GenSol Diagnostics DNA Testing, DNA Coat/Trait Panel, DNA Profile, Agouti DNA Test, DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Receiving a Vom Stevens pup has been hands down the best experience I could have ever hoped for. Carie was very prompt in her responsiveness and happy to answer any questions that we had. The care, compassion, and quality of her breeding program is exceptional, and unmatched. We couldn't be happier with our new girl, and feel that we couldn't have made a better choice than Vom Stevens, and are so thankful to have found them.
