Q. & A. with Karen
Why did you start breeding?
I started breeding German Shepherds when I was 19 years old. I have always had German Shepherds growing up on the farm as a kid along with my side kick a blue healer. I had a female German Shepherd name Sissy and I was talked into a male German Shepherd that needed a loving home and I accepted (of course), beautiful dog with a lot of protentional. I decided to breed the pair and that is how it all started.
What makes your program special?
I have done extensive background on each of my breeding dogs to assure that i can better the breed and get puppies that can excel in life with training and jobs they are bred for. I learned a lot about dogs because I was so knowledgeable about horses. same concept, smaller animal. You cannot expect a horse that is bred to run barrels and make it a western pleasure horse.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies have long coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, and black and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Von Skvely' Haus reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
