I'm Mike C., the breeder behind Von Zecher German Shepherds located in Strasburg, CO. My wife and I are hobby breeders for 40 years. We have a litter periodically. We show and breed only our best and healthiest dogs.
Q. & A. with Mike
Why did you start breeding?
Approximately 30 years ago we started showing our German Shepherd Dog (GSD). We really enjoyed the breed, socializing them and meeting other owners and exhibitors. We had the opportunity of getting to know and becoming good friends with the owner of one of the top GSDs in the world in Arvada Colorado. She taught us a lot about the breed and was very influential in nurturing and building our enthusiasm for showing our dogs.
What makes your program special?
We are hobby breeders that only breed quality, healthy dogs that meet the AKC standard. We have never been in this to make money. We try to screen all prospective owners to be as sure as we can that our puppies only go to great homes and environments regardless if they are shown or just someone's best buddies.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Von Zecher German Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Temperament Test
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
