I'm Jonathan D., the breeder behind WMD German Shepherds located in Lawrence, KS. Our kennel is veteran owned and our goal is to improve upon the temperament and strength of the working German Shepherd. We strive to breed the healthiest, most clear headed dogs available. All of the dogs in our breeding program are titled in protection sports and fully health tested.
Q. & A. with Jonathan
Why did you start breeding?
I have always worked with animals since I was a child. I knew after I got out of the Army that I wanted to work with dogs but didn't know in what way. I started out owning a dog daycare but wanted to work with dogs in a different way. I found a breeder of near me who has mentored me and taught me what a good breeding program looks like. I wouldn't have the quality dogs or my knowledge without her!
What makes your program special?
All of our dogs are titled in protection sport, have highly rated hips and elbows and have been DNA screened for DM. Not only have our dogs been titled but they all get worked regularly to maintain their health and mental stimulation. I know each one of our dogs strengths and weaknesses and have made breeding choices based these characteristics to improve on their lineage.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies include long and stock coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include sable, black, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Great level
WMD German Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
DNA Disease Panel, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
