Meet the breeder

I'm the breeder behind Zuflucht K9s located in Charlotte, NC. We bred for health, temperament, and conformation. Our dogs are our passion. Our hopes as breeders are that we can provide the best quality puppies with an outstanding temperament that will, in turn, make a lasting impression on you and your family as they have in ours.

Q. & A. with Shanna

  • Why did you start breeding?

I grew up in the dog world. After suffering severe hearing loss in my 20's, I found my way again with the help of a service dog. He changed my life, and I wouldn't be where I am today without him. I felt so strongly about the impact he had on my life that I decided to put my knowledge and training to use and create a breeding program geared towards canine prospects capable of service work.
  • What makes your program special?

Our program is unique in that our canines are not raised in kennel runs but in a family environment. Canines either live in our home or in co-owned homes so that they are given the attention and stimulation needed to thrive. Our puppies are raised with the Puppy Culture Program and have hundreds of hours put into each individual puppy to promote confidence and stability.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Parent health testing

Zuflucht K9s reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Temperament Test, Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), DNA Profile, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

I can’t say enough wonderful things about my experience with Zuflucht K9s. I recently adopted my incredible German Shepherd from them, and from the very first interaction, I knew I was in the best hands. Shanna, who runs Zuflucht K9s, is nothing short of extraordinary. She is knowledgeable, caring, and deeply passionate about every dog she raises and places. Her kindness and dedication shine through in everything she does—from the thoughtful way she matches dogs with their future families to the loving care she provides throughout the entire process. What truly sets Shanna apart is how much heart she puts into her work. She goes above and beyond in every aspect and made me feel supported, informed, and welcomed every step of the way. Not only did I bring home a beautifully trained, well-adjusted dog, but I also feel incredibly grateful to have met such a wonderful human being. I am beyond thrilled with my new companion, and I know this is just the beginning of my connection with Zuflucht K9s. I’ll absolutely be back in the future, and I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. Thank you, Shanna, for everything—you’ve given me a lifelong friend, and I hope to stay connected with you for many years to come.

Atreyu Vom Zuflucht is an active spontaneous puppy. He loves to get into mischief and running after his cat siblings. He uses his past time running in the backyard and doing puppy school. He enjoys playtime with his new friend Storm.

Shanna was an absolute pleasure to work with! From the very start, she kept us updated with the litter and gave thorough weekly updates. Any questions I had, she was very quick to respond which made the process go as smoothly as possible. Nova (Lime green collar from P-litter) has been such a wonderful addition. She is smart, affectionate, and has a wonderful temperament towards new people and other animals. Even after picking up Nova, Shanna has been there to answer any questions and concerns I have had and has checked in to see how Nova has been adjusting. I couldn’t recommend Zuflucht K9s more, they clearly put in a lot of work into their breeding program and it shows. Not only that, but their love for their puppies is undeniable which is wonderful to see!
