Zwinger vom Roten Wald

Karen W.

Breeder of German Shepherds

Meet the breeder

I'm Karen W., the breeder behind Zwinger vom Roten Wald located in Fremont, Ca, CA. German Shepherds are an incredible breed, and we decided to start our breeding program in order to preserve the wonderful qualities we found in our dogs. They excel both in their work and make wonderful companions. We are dedicated to improving our lines with each generation so that the breed will continue to thrive for a long time to come.

Q. & A. with Karen

  • Why did you start breeding?

I decided to breed dogs since I didn't have any children. I didn't want to be a backyard breeder. When I learned of the World standard of German Shepherds, I decided to aim my breeding program towards their standards.
  • What makes your program special?

Not only do I show and title my dogs in Schutzhund, I make sure that they are also good house pets too. Parents are also health tested and have temperament testing through their BH test.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
