In this module, we will focus on the early stages that puppies go through and what we should do with them when. Understanding these stages is important so we know what to do with our pups when. Doing too little or too much during a stage can have lifelong implications for our puppies, while doing the right things at the right time will set them up for success.

Canine development is broken eight stages, from birth to old age. In this course, We’ll be covering the first three since these are the times that our pups are with us:

  • Neonatal
  • Transition
  • Sensitive

In future classes like Savvy Socialization, we combine the Transition and beginning Sensitive period into the Early Sensitive Period.

Get started by downloading and printing the Puppy Rearing Study Guides, Part 1 and Part 2, watch the videos, and take the quiz. Don’t forget to go through the Additional Resources for additional videos and tools you can use with your pups.

Additional Resources

Neonatal Period

Consider using Early Scent Introduction (ESI) and Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), also known as Biosensor, during your pups’ first days to develop their brains and bodies.

Transition Period

During the Transition period, consider introducing an Adventure Box to your litter and, if you have very stable adult dogs, introduction your pups to play through interactions with adult dogs. If you don’t have other dogs, your dam will most likely start playing with her pups in a few weeks so don’t worry.

Sensitive Period

Between 5 and 8 weeks, one of your goals should be to provide enriching environments for your pups. The videos below show examples of what you might do.

  • Stimulating puppy pens
  • Bottle Pools
  • Adventure Walks
