In this module, we will learn about epigenetics and discuss how the decisions we make regarding the care of our dogs and puppies affect our pups’ lives, health, temperament, and genetics. Epigenetics is a new science that involves how the environment affects the way a dog’s (or human’s) genes are expressed. You may have heard about this in regards to human disease. Perhaps you inherited the gene for heart disease from your parents but whether or not you develop heart disease, whether that gene will be expressed, depends upon your diet, how much you exercise and sleep, and how well you manage the stress in your life. The genes you got from your parents are your genetics but your diet, exercise, etc are epigenetic influences. We are also finding out now that some of these environmental influences can be passed down through generations.

Epigenetics also influences our dogs. The food we feed parents and grandparents, their fitness, and the stress in their lives all influence a puppy’s health, temperament, and longevity. We’ll be covering:

  • Parent’s health, age, and temperament
  • Dam’s nutrition, her stress, and activities
  • Birth method, whether puppies are born by C-section or vaginal birth
  • Dam’s mothering skills
  • Environmental toxins including chemicals and radiation
