Your Litter A to Z, Module 5 - Placing Your Puppies

How To Find The Right Homes For Your Pups

No matter how well bred and raised your pups are, if they don’t end up in the right home, they won’t thrive and most likely, neither will you. Great matches between homes and pups bring tremendous joy to all concerned but bad matches make everyone miserable. These bad matches can also be costly to you in terms of time, money and sanity. Setting up a home selection process tailored to your kennel and breeding goals will help you increase the number of great matches you make and reduce your bad ones. Doing it BEFORE your pups are born, will make the process even easier.

Selecting Homes For Your Pups

Start with this video about matching your home-selection process to your breeding goals, dogs and you. (For most of us, it’s important for us to like our buyers, too! My saying is that people who annoy you before they buy, will continue to annoy you for the dog’s lifetime.)

Finding Homes For Your Pups

Now, let’s go through the 8 steps to selecting a buyer. With the growth of Good Dog, some of this will take place through your Good Dog page and dashboard but the process is still the same.

Sample Emails, Documents and Applications

Good Dog’s Legal Hub has many sample documents for you to use. Here are a few that we have used to find and commit to our buyers.

Application Questions

Your application can help you identify whether an application is right for you and your puppies. Remember, your buyers can help you further your breeding program so think about the specific information that you want, not just what everyone else wants.

Information About You and Your Litter

  • Sample About Us – add more info about you and your dogs to your Good Dog webpage so you can find the buyers that you are looking for and who will thrive for your dogs

Reference Request

We highly recommend you check references on your buyers. Here are sample reference requests, including a vet reference request.

Deposit Acceptance Note
Your deposit agreement can be anything you want it to be as long as it is clear, in writing, and signed by you and your buyer. Be sure to include details like whether the deposit is refundable or not, and under what circumstances. Watch the Breeder Contracts and Warranties for more details.

Your Contracts and Warranties
Your contracts and warranties should be tailored to your needs and those of your buyers. Watch the Breeder Contracts and Warranties class for more help. If you are really concerned, have your contracts and warranties reviewed by a lawyer. Our samples are only offered as a starting point. They are most likely not fool-proof in your state or province.
