Q. & A. with Julie

  • Why did you start breeding?

I saw my first Rottweiler in 1982, and it was love at first sight! A magnificent, assured female, that was the Captain of her owners fishing boat. In 1990, upon graduating from college, and establishing my new life, I got my first Rottweiler. Since then I have never been without one. I have admired the Basenji breed since I was a young girl, after reading "Weep No More My Lady". From that time onward, I was fascinated with the Special little African hunting dog, and the fact that they are still being utilized in the Congo, as they have been for thousands of years!
  • What makes your program special?

We believe in producing healthy, correct, Basenjis. We want to help carry on the little African Barkless breed.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Basenji puppies are brindle and white. Rottweiler puppies are black and mahogany. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Excellent level

MY HEART'S TREASURES reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Basenjis.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Fanconi Syndrome, PRA, Basenji Type

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
