Meet the breeder

I'm Melissa L., the breeder behind Arctic Kennels (Pomskies, Akitas & Shibas) located in Fairbanks, AK. I am a high-quality AKC dog breeding facility, that raises show quality Akitas, Shiba Inu, & Pomsky dogs. We ship worldwide to happy customers. I offer dog training tips & advice. All puppies are born in my house, get socialized, & I offer a 2-year health guarantee. I am AK State business licensed & take great pride in keeping a very well run kennel. Been doing this about 14 years now, always striving to improve the breed.

Q. & A. with Melissa

  • Why did you start breeding?

I grew up with a tiny dog who was awesome, however, I had always wanted a big dog. When I left home, my first big dog was an Akita / Rottweiler mix. She was such a neat dog. I researched Akitas. Then I came into ownership of a free female AKC Akita, and after that, I could have no other breed of dog - the king of all dogs - the Akita. Once you love one, you'll never go back!
  • What makes your program special?

I raise both American and Japanese Akitas, all AKC registered. I breed towards the AKC standard, each litter an improvement to the breed, not just done out of convenience. Breeding dogs is both an art and a science, and I have university degrees in both fields. Keeping an eye for detail as well as pulling back to see the whole picture, is something I take pride in. Akitas are my life.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Pomsky puppies include mini and standard sizes. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Shiba Inu puppies include red, black and tan, and sesame. Pomsky puppies include wolf sable, white, black and white, merle, and red and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Getting a puppy from Melissa

Melissa partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 6 weeks old.

“If you send me a deposit before a letter is born, or when the puppies are still very young, sometimes I will wait to assign a specific puppy to a specific family, until we can more accurately assess the structure and temperament of the puppy when they reach about 6 to 7 weeks old. At that time we will discuss all the different puppies qualities and what would fit your family best and what you are looking for the most. This helps the success rate of puppies staying in families with the least amount of conflict and the most amount of Wonderful future success.”

Overall has been a great experience using gooddog to help me getting a little buddy to bring home for my Family. Melissa has been very helpful the whole process and giving us information about the breed as well. Melissa helped us be less stressful about the flying our pup from Alaska to Nyc . Very greatful for everything and for our beloved puppy
