Announcing our ‘9/11 Notable K-9 Heroes Litter’ More than 300 search-and-rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero and the Pentagon after the September 11, 2001 attacks to locate survivors and recover victims. Several search & rescue dogs and service animals became widely recognized for their extraordinary service on September 11 and during the long weeks of recovery that followed: 🐕 Sirius: A yellow Labrador Retriever who served as an explosive-detection K-9 for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Sirius was stationed in the basement office of the South Tower when the attacks occurred. He was the only working K-9 killed on 9/11 when the tower collapsed. His remains were recovered in 2002 and received full police honors. [1, 2] (Yellow Collar Biggest Boy) 👮🏼‍♂️ Apollo: An NYPD German Shepherd who was the first K-9 to arrive at the World Trade Center site and narrowly escaped injury during the collapse. [3] (Littlest Boy Blue Collar) 🐕‍🦺Jake: A stray black Labrador Retriever who was rescued from the streets with a broken leg and hip injuries before being trained as an elite FEMA disaster dog. He searched the toxic debris field at Ground Zero for 17 consecutive days. [4, 5] (Black Collar Darkest Boy) 🪴Sage: A FEMA-certified Border Collie who worked the wreckage at the Pentagon and successfully sniffed out terrorist remains. [6, 7] (Green Collar Boy with a white spot on his head) 🎖️Bretagne: A Golden Retriever who, along with her handler Denise Corliss, traveled from Texas to Ground Zero. She worked 12-hour shifts for 10 days straight. Bretagne lived to be 16 years old and was honored as the last surviving search and rescue dog from the 9/11 deployment. [8] (Red Collar Girl)
