I'm Nicholas H., the breeder behind Aspenwood Standard Poodles located in Appleton, WI. I breed versatile standards for companion performance activities. I trained and titled Nova myself and located the sire through BetterBred. I hunt and believe in a holistic approach to breeding including biddability, conformation, drive, and affable temperaments. My dogs are all OFA CHIC certified.
Q. & A. with Nicholas
Why did you start breeding?
As my skills in dog training developed a mentor encouraged me to take this next step. I have a gift for communicating with animals and seeing their potential. Before purchasing my first Standard we created a plan to leave the door open in the future for breeding if we could positively contribute to the breed and provide quality opportunities for others to succeed in their areas of interest.
What makes your program special?
I pride myself on three things: preparation, quality, and credentials. I have carefully prepared to breed through education, excellent mentoring, and responsible planning. My dogs are thoughtfully selected through holistic criteria for versatility. They also love what they do and it shows! My dogs exceed OFA CHIC standards, are pedigreed, and carry multiple titles and/or working certificates.
What are the different breed sizes in your program?
Our puppies are standard size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Autumn, mom
Poodle
About Autumn
Autumn is a spirited, intelligent and beautiful purebred standard poodle. She is being titled in hunting in both AKC and UKC. Her mother was a titled hunter and father Westminster GCHP. She represents the finest of my breeding and has been a pleasure to train. She is a hard worker and has drive to do amazing activities helping her to live up to the poodles versatile nature. She is also loving and happy go lucky!
Nova, mom
Poodle
About Nova
Nova is a biddable, spirited, tall black poodle who is naturally obedient and loves to do anything with her owner and family. She is very smart, loyal, playful and also pretty gentle. She is confident and comfortable with strangers and would love to play with anyone or any dog that comes her way. Overall, she is a nice blend of careful and confident. She is in excellent health and so are all her littermates. She has a nice prancing poodle gate and we get compliments on how pretty she looks most places we go. She travels great. No food sensitivities or car sickness.
Nova has a great on/off switch and when she wants to, shows fantastic drive. She loves retrieving and flushing her birds! She will hunt all day and hopes to curl up at your feet at night. She started retrieving to hand within hours of bringing her home. Although water shy in the beginning, now she loves long swims and playing with the kids on our floating raft. More than one judge or fellow hunter has been impressed by her scenting skills and speed. Her natural flushing style includes a “flash point” and some hesitations as she often catches the birds out of the air. Her skillset lends itself to upland hunting or other performance sports while still being an excellent in home companion.
As with many poodles, Nova loves learning and she thrives on structured training. She often goes out shopping with me and enjoys greeting people in the stores that welcome her! A good home for her puppies would be a person or family that is looking for a true companion canine, performance prospect, or other form of working dog. My wife says Nova is more like a human than any dog she has ever been around!
Nova currently holds the following titles: JHU, SHU, JH, WC/WCX, SHR, HR, UH and a MHU pass.

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
