“At Aurum Purus, puppies are matched according to temperament, aptitude, energy level, confidence, engagement, and each family’s individual needs—not simply by appearance or order of inquiry. Evaluation begins at birth and continues every day as we observe the entire litter together and each puppy individually. Because our puppies are raised in our home, we see how they respond across many ordinary and structured situations, including handling, feeding, new environments, unfamiliar surfaces, sounds, people, problem-solving activities, early training, play, frustration, recovery, and rest. We carefully note patterns such as handler focus, resilience, independence, sensitivity, persistence, sociability, activity level, and willingness to engage. Each puppy also completes Volhard temperament testing at an age-appropriate stage. We use those results as one part of a much broader evaluation rather than treating a single test as a definitive label. Volhard scores are considered alongside weeks of daily observation, developmental history, health, structure, training responses, and the puppy’s behavior within the litter. Families are asked about their household, experience, lifestyle, activity level, expectations, other animals, children, training plans, and the role they hope their puppy will fill. Service-dog applicants are evaluated with particular care because a successful prospect requires a suitable combination of health, confidence, stability, handler engagement, resilience, and trainability. Our goal is not to identify a “best” puppy, but to determine which puppy is the best fit for each approved home. We discuss our observations honestly and may recommend a different puppy than the family initially noticed. We also reserve the right to decline or postpone a placement when we do not believe the available puppy and home are appropriately matched.
