I'm Auna K., the breeder behind Aviary Kennels located in Laramie, WY. As a preservation breeder, I am committed to breeding dogs that display both the physical attributes and temperament that go into making each breed unique. The Brittany is, and always has been, a breed of moderation: moderate size, moderate furnishings, and moderate temperament.
Q. & A. with Auna
Why did you start breeding?
Waverly, my first Brittany, came home back in 2021. I was lucky enough to live near Christine Ward-Weber of Cimmaron Brittanys, who mentored me in my first ventures into the show world and encouraged me every step of the way. After dabbling in a number of sports, hunting, testing in NAVHDA, and completing all her health testing, we decided to take the leap into breeding.
What makes your program special?
Our goal is to produce versatile, close to medium ranging dogs that are as much a pleasure to live with and train as they are to hunt behind for the average foot hunter. To that end, I strive to breed for natural retrieves and dogs that handle well at a moderate range. We know that for most families, their bird dogs are companions first, so a sound temperament is high on our priority list.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include orange and white and liver and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Waverly
Waverly is my first Brittany and has been my "try-everything, do-everything" dog. She is biddable, eager to please, and an honest worker.
In the house, Waverly has an excellent off switch and has adjusted easily between homes with large yards and apartment living. In the field, she has a close to medium range, which she adjusts depending on the cover (generally between 30 yards in the grouse woods out to 250 yards in the open prairie and sage). She passed her NAVHDA Natural ability test with a 102 prize 3 with full scores in every category except pointing, which I expected being that she'd had very little bird contact prior to the test! Our proudest moment were her two perfect water retrieves to hand. Since then we have hunted dusky grouse, ruffed grouse, sage-grouse, chukar, pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, and ducks.
Her love for retrieving has translated well to performance sports, where her favorite game (and word) is frisbee! Waverly earned her Certified Roller Dog (CRD) and Certified Frisbee Dog (CFD) titles through the K9 Frisbee Toss and Fetch Worldwide League competing at our local club. Waverly has been a natural at disc and I plan to continue competing with her. We are also currently training for rally and obedience.
Waverly is mild-mannered and adores children. We recently completed her certification as a therapy dog, which we believe exemplifies the sociable, trainable temperaments that we strive for in our Brittanys. We sometimes joke that she's both a good and bad breed ambassador, since she is sometimes so easygoing that she might make the wrong type of home think they should get a Brittany!

Parent health testing
Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Aviary Kennels reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Brittanys.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
