I'm Denise M., the breeder behind B&R Kennel located in Beaverdam, VA. I breed because I love my dogs and I want to bless others with this magnificent breed. By creating an environment of health and harmony for young puppies, I believe I am able to give each little pup the very best chance to reach its potential, express its best character, and bring forth its greatest gifts in the relationship with itself and to its family.

Why did you start breeding?
I initially started breeding because I wanted a puppy. I had a male and a female and they produced the most gorgeous pups! People saw how I handled the process and wanted pups of their own. The fulfillment of seeing new puppies born, watching them grow, and helping shape them and train them in preparation for their new forever homes is the most rewarding experience ever! It has been an absolute joy of a journey, and I am so happy to be able to share these wonderful dogs with other loving families and individuals.What makes your program special?
I put my time and energy into ensuring all of my puppy buyers get a thorough, professional, and exciting experience. I allow all buyers to come and play with their pups, I send daily videos of puppy activity, and I am available to them as they set out on this new and exciting journey. I also put a lot of emphasis on training and socializing my puppies. They are each house and crate trained before they leave my home and are showered with lots of love and affection!What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Litter update on 23 Nov. •…What a week! We are eating mush (fresh food blended with homemade puppy formula); we are getting used to our potty tray although none of us have mastered the technique quite yet. We are socializing with some bigger dogs (not just mom) and we are very curious. We will continue to eat the mush for another week and then move onto choppy food.

Litter update on 21 Nov. •…Early socialization with one of our older females. As you can see they are not shy, they are inquisitive. What you see in the bowl is homemade puppy formula mixed with some fresh food.

Litter update on 16 Nov. •…This week we are introducing the litter tray and puppy mush. Everyone is thriving. Only 1 male and 1 female remain available. Official picks for the males will take place on 11/22. I will share individual videos of each male in the next few days so you can see them as individuals rather than as a group.

Litter update on 01 Nov. •…One week pupdate. Puppies have doubled their birth weight and they consistently gather on the puppy heating pad; the heating pad is safer than a heat lamp when it comes to regulating temperature. Leah is continuing to be a wonderful mother although she does get distracted with things happening outdoors however, she quickly returns to the whelping area once the alert is acknowledged by me. I will post photos next week (2 weeks old) when they’re all large enough to wear colored collars.

Litter update on 26 Oct. •…This litter is superb! Puppies have doubled their weight in 24 hours which is a sign of a thriving litter. Leah is a remarkable first-time mom, caring for the puppies and providing a 24 hour milk station. If you don’t already follow us on FB, please do so. Litter update on 18 Sept. •…We are ready to go to our new homes! King and Kaiser (shown here) are still homeless and waiting for that perfect pairing. Transport is scheduled to depart Friday for Philly, PA with arrival time around 1pm so if you’re in that area and you have interest, let us know immediately! I also have transport heading south to the Danville, VA area with arrival around noon so, again if you’re interested and want to jump on that wagon, let me know immediately. All other transports will be next week and thereafter.

Litter update on 14 Sept. •…This is countdown week. We will be leaving with our new family’s this weekend. We are eating solid food all of the time and we are gaining weight as expected. Our go home bags are ready. We are playful, we are guarded (we bark when there’s something new); we are quiet and reserved and we have a set schedule for eating and sleeping. I will write all of this down for you and include it in your puppy go home bag.

Litter update on 08 Sept. •…We started with a bath, everyone did great. There is no evidence of car/motion sickness. Vet report revealed that litter weight is in line with the size of the litter, perfect bites, no hernia, negative fecal, and descended testicles. Each of you will receive a personalized copy of today’s report. Puppies received their first set of vaccinations today.

Litter update on 06 Sept. •…We are growing like weeds! We are eating solid food although mom’s food is our favorite (mom eats raw); we get to taste it and we love it and then mom eats all of it and we have to eat the other stuff. We just finished our 3rd round of deworming and we love to romp and play. Our vet appointment is scheduled for Monday at 4pm and we’ll update again once that’s over. Once we receive our shots we’ll be allowed to go outside and we’re excited about that and all of the toys that’s in the puppy jungle gym.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)

Denise was very easy to work with. I must say she does an incredible job of raising pups. We purchased Marquess, now Ranger, and he's so calm, very smart, confident. I feel he is going to be easy to train. He already goes in his crate no problem. He is already catching on with potty training. And he is even been on long walks in the woods. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Denise. She was very knowledgeable about the breed and was able to provide us with a lot of information about our Bo mans parents health history etc.. Denise was SO wonderful to work with. When I lost my soul shepherd I was so lost and had looked at other dogs but knew I couldn’t possibly get another one who looked or was anything like my girl I lost. Denise Mayhew, B&R Kennel, is a wonderful breeder who gave us our beautiful German Shepherd puppies Chloe and Gracie. She was available to quickly answer questions and concerns starting with our first conversation, through the adoption process and she continues to be a valued advisor even post adoption. We also appreciated her making our girls’ parents AKC and medical paperwork for our own files and the initial registration process with AKC. Preparing our GSDs with crate training made the transition at our home very easy and the girls have learned to jump into their crates happily without it being an issue. Denise gave me my best friend about a year and a half ago (Bones). She is very knowledgeable about the breed! She is a very responsible breeder. We call her/text her all the time, still, for any advice and questions we may have regarding our shepherd and even our other dogs as well. During our purchase, she did a great job updating us and sending pictures of our pup. It was so sweet! She did a wonderful job keeping our puppy happy and healthy until it was time for him to come home with us and hasn’t had any medical issues since! He is a very smart and loving family dog.
