About Salsa
Salsa is a healthy seven-year old bitch. Her birthday is September 10, 2016. She’s 24” tall and 60 pounds.
HIPS: GOOD
ELBOWS: NORMAL
EYES: NORMAL
CARDIAC: NORMAL
THYRIOD: NORMAL
DNA Profile: Embark
Salsa is a Czech import with an interesting pedigree. – Int. CH Prot Deabei IGP3 and Odeta z Labskeho privozu, ZM. (see next paragraph for link)
All the males in her litter had both testicles at 8 weeks. And all littermates and close relatives are healthy, except for one sister and one brother. Her sister has had some type of occasional seizures starting at about 1.5 yrs old until she was spayed. They were not often, not bad and they did not use any medications for her. No other cases are known in her pedigree. The one brother had some sort of elbow injury and did not get a normal elbow rating. Salsa’s father died at 10 yrs from cancer.
Salsa has been DNA tested with Embark and her profile is public.
Her DNA came back that her genes are 42% Malinois, 29% Sheepdog (Groenendael) and 29% Tervuren. Talk about diversity!!
Again, you can look for yourself at the results on her littermates in shows and in health here at the Deabei Kennel page. From this page you can also see pictures of her parents, siblings and, through the pedigree, links to her other ancestors.
Salsa is both very strong and very sensitive. She has good working ability, learns very quickly and is very biddable. She is sound in all kinds of environments and is social to a point. She does have a sense of self-preservation and does not like working in very hot conditions (but will when asked). She is a dominant bitch, but not a tyrant. She can be excessively enthusiastic in greeting those she adopts as friends/family, but, sometimes mistakes neutral acquaintances as friends and corrects her attitude towards them quickly. She does not seem to understand “personal space” needs in humans but generally respects space needs of other dogs and cats. She is a thinker. She respects rules as explained, but will sometimes look for loopholes or alternate means.
Sport (Schutzhund/IGP): She loves to fight her helper, has good grips and has a "real" edge to her. She is sensitive to her handler (Sue). She worries about being wrong and wants very much to please. Toys/balls are no reward for her; she works mostly for praise and secondly for food. She tends to get mad/angry when hurt or unfairly treated but does not hold a grudge. She just gets a bit more intense. She is not equipment dependent; she targets the person, not the sleeve. She is not gun sensitive at all. Her tracking and obedience are generally good, but can lack luster in the heat. Overall, she was a very good “club” dog. She earned her IGP 1, was ready for but did jot trial for her IGP 2, earned a PSA PDC and is now retired from bite sport.
Herding: She is very good and has earned the praise of the sheep owners. She is strong, clear headed, takes direction well, and does not go overboard when asked to push reluctant sheep. She has worked the pens at both Border Collie trials and AKC/AHBA trials. She has not been worked in open fields yet, but expect that her biddability will help carry her through those challenges in the future. She is the best herding dog Sue has worked.
Agility: Salsa has never been trained in agility, so no direct description of her work is possible. However, based on her limited exposure to agility equipment and on her work on the sport hurdle and A-frame we feel that she would be a very good agility dog. She takes direction very well and is an excellent, happy jumper.
Nosework: Salsa has not been trained for Nosework trials. Sue has dabbled and introduced scent indication in a box and that went well. Given more training, we believe she would excel.
Obedience/Rally: Salsa is not a flashy or “tight” worker but with a different handler she may have been. She is able to focus well, wants to please and is not easily distracted. She seems to work a bit better in small spaces vs. open field IGP obedience.
Conformation: In limited showing, Salsa has earned 5 points including 1 major. Salsa is a big girl compared to other bitches in the ring these days. She does measure within standard though. Salsa has very good structure, front and rear and is perfectly balanced. She moves strong and true, covering ground easily. Salsa has good bone to carry her, but it is in good proportion to her overall size. Salsa is not refined by any definition. As her breeder likes to say she “is pretty enough” for a working dog and we agree. Salsa does not carry a plush or full flowing coat, but it is a correct double coat with nice color. She has a correct scissor bite with full dentition.
She travels extremely well; is good in the house and settles well. She has lived with cats and other dogs. She is dominant and will exert this over other bitches in purely social situations so she is not given the chance. In training or when otherwise under command she is neutral with other dogs.
