Meet the breeder

I'm Rachael S., the breeder behind Black Thumb Homestead located in Easley, SC. Our dogs are not only active employees on our family farm, but well loved members of our family & household. With a long history of nationally winning rabbits, we are applying our knowledge of breeding the best to our favorite breed. Our focus is on Pembrokes that can do the job they were bred for.

Q. & A. with Rachael

  • Why did you start breeding?

Starting the homestead was always about being able to provide better nutrition for my family (which includes dogs). So when a breeder friend decided to jump into Pembrokes & I met her starting dogs, I knew I was going to get an excellent working companion & then she went & exceeded every goal I asked her to meet. Daisy is the epitome of what I love about the breed; smart, sturdy, & full of heart.
  • What makes your program special?

Here at Black Thumb Homestead, we focus on the working Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Although working to breed to standard, movement and function is our #1 focus. With their high drive and endless energy that balances with your snuggly best friend, Pems are the ultimate small scale homestead dog! In order to be successful long term, we keep a keen focus on health and nutrition in our dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red, sable, and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), DNA Disease Panel, Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), von Willebrand Disease I (vWD I)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

We had been looking for a corgi for a few months, most people on this app have not been super responsive, but Rachael got back to us right away and was very accommodating and responsive to questions. Our puppy is everything we hoped he would be! Well socialized and healthy! She supplied all the necessary paperwork and information when we picked him up and has reached out a couple times to check up on him. We are very happy since we were initially apprehensive about driving so far for a puppy we’ve only seen on photos. I would highly recommend Rachael for anyone interested in a corgi!

Rachael was very thorough and answered every question with great detail. She provided regular updates on the puppies, and I loved being able to follow their growth. She also started crate training which made the transition to our home a lot easier. Rachael was great to work with.
