Meet the breeder

I'm Shari J., the breeder behind Vom Kylohaus German Shepherds located in Salem, VA. We breed working-line German Shepherds who could also make great companions. Our dogs are versatile, loving, and intelligent! Our dogs are bred for health and temperament. We do OFAs and DM testing. Our puppies come with a 2-year genetic health guarantee as well as all age-appropriate vetting. All vaccines are given by a licensed veterinarian. Puppies undergo temperament testing by a professional trainer at 5 weeks old.

Q. & A. with Shari

  • Why did you start breeding?

I lost Kylo when he was just 4 months old to a congenital heart defect. We were waiting for an appointment with a cardiologist when his heart suddenly gave out one morning. I have always loved the breed, and never wanted another family to experience what I have, so I decided to start breeding.
  • What makes your program special?

I love every single puppy as they are my own. My dogs are pets first, and breeding dogs last. I always consider my dogs’ wellbeing above all else. They all live inside, and sleep in bed with me.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies include long, stock, and plush coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include sable, black, and bi-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Shari

Shari has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

After buyers complete the application and screening process, Shari partners with them to find the best puppy match.

“Please submit your application here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BuFmFTmSm/?mibextid=wwXIfr I consider gender/color/coat preference, but the primary selection is based on temperament matching. I often match when buyers are approved, however that can change once puppies are assessed at 6-7 weeks. I will always ensure the best match for each home, but I am confident that matched puppies from the beginning will be a good fit. I will only offer those who are showing excellent alignment at approval. ”

Excellent level

Vom Kylohaus German Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
