I'm Sherry C., the breeder behind Carlson Hill Farm located in Humboldt, IA. I breed German Shepherds and Shih Tzus who are beautiful, healthy, and have great dispositions. The puppies are raised to become loving members of your family. The GS dogs come from championship lines and have hip and elbow testing to ensure they are healthy. They are well loved and socialized!
Q. & A. with Sherry
Why did you start breeding?
I joined an AKC club and volunteered at dog shows. I became interested in showing and training. I entered my Shepherd in classes and eventually went to some shows. When people saw my dog they would ask me if I was going to breed her because she is beautiful. As I visited with other AKC breeders and my vet I made the decision to breed.
What makes your program special?
My puppies have access to a large, safe outdoor environment that exposes them to a variety of animals, people, and environmental stimuli. They meet and interact with a large variety of people who socialize and play with them, and spend LOTS of time around kids of various ages. A stud was carefully selected to match my female to improve the breed.
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
German Shepherd puppies have stock coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our Shih Tzu puppies include tricolor and black and white. German Shepherd puppies include sable, black, and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Carlson Hill Farm reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for German Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Sherry did an excellent job of sending us regular pictures of Kira Lola as she was growing and developing. She has now been home with us for 3 weeks and we are absolutely in love! She has a wonderful temperament and has transitioned well into her new home! We were able to meet the parents, who were wonderfully sweet dogs! If we decide to expand our family again, we will definitely return to Sherry!!

Working with Sherry was an incredible experience from start to finish. She was great with communication, always keeping us informed and answering any questions we had. It is clear how much she cares about her puppies and the families they go to. We couldn’t be happier with our new pup, Freyja - she is healthy, well-socialized, and has been a perfect fit for our family. I highly recommend Sherry to anyone looking for a quality breeder and an amazing new furry friend!

Subject: A truly exceptional experience with Carlson Hill Farms!
I can't recommend Sherry Carlson and her family highly enough. After bringing my new German Shepherd puppy, Zoey, home. From my first inquiry, it was clear that Sherry is an incredibly knowledgeable, responsible, and caring breeder.
The entire process was wonderful. Sherry was transparent and communicative, providing updates with photos and videos so I could watch Zoey grow and get to know her unique personality. This consistent communication made me feel connected to Zoey even before bringing her home.
It was also evident that the puppies were not raised in a puppy mill, but a loving, caring, enriching environment. You could tell, Zoey was used to being held and loved on. She was well socialized even before coming to her new home.
When I arrived to pick up Zoey, the entire place was wonderful, spacious, and clean. I met the mother Anna (Dam), who was extremely friendly and affectionate, a testament to the excellent temperaments to the puppies they produce. You won’t find a better breeder or caring family than those at Carlson Hill Farms.

I have always wanted a GSD and life brought me a Belgian Malinois I rescued a little over a year ago! Watching him as I drive trucks and he settles in the front set he seems a little lonely…of course I give him plenty of love but having a little sister would be great!!! I started looking online where to purchase a GSD and the only site I trusted was Good Dog! I took three tries but the third one was a charm! I found my perfect girl! When asking about her and putting the deposit Sherry was so helpful with helping with information on next steps! She also sent me videos of my baby until I finally had her in my arms! Sherry has also made sure Zenna had everything I needed to help transition Zenna into her new environment plus her first set of puppy shots and worming! Thank you Good dog and Sherry with finding my fur baby Zenna!!!!
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
