I'm Emily K., the breeder behind Deer Run Goldens located in Bethlehem, PA. Our Golden Retrievers have all their health clearances, including normal hips, elbows, hearts, eyes, and genetic panels. The puppies are raised in our home. Past puppies from Willow and Hank have proven to be excellent companions, but are also well suited for obedience, hunting, and agility.
Q. & A. with Emily
Why did you start breeding?
When it was time to add a golden to our family, I did a lot of research and found that Goldens are often bred to look a certain way so that they will win conformation titles, while less attention is paid to disposition and the degree of inbreeding (which can lead to health problems). I felt I could help reverse this trend by focusing more on the health and temperament.
What makes your program special?
We take breeding Goldens very seriously to produce healthy puppies. In many dog breeds, including Golden Retrievers, inbreeding has led to health problems. To prevent inbreeding, we calculate the Coefficient of Inbreeding or COI between the dam and the sire. A low COI means that the dam and the sire are unrelated. The coefficient of inbreeding for our litters is well below the breed standard.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include dark golden and golden. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Deer Run Goldens reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Golden Retrievers.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
DNA Disease Panel, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis 5 (NCL5), Golden Retriever Type, Ichthyosis, Golden Retriever Type 1, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), PRA, Golden Retriever 2, PRA, Golden Retriever 1
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
