I'm Diana F., the breeder behind Desert Willow Kennel located in Borrego Springs, CA. We are a small, in-home breeding program where we prioritize giving each dog and puppy the best care that we can. We put hours of work into each puppy to insure you get the smartest, easiest to train bundle of spunk! We love all of our animals and enjoy sharing the love of this breed with other individuals and families!
Q. & A. with Diana
Why did you start breeding?
As far as I can remember I've known I would always do something with animals.
While woking for a veterinarian in the 1980s, I purchased a really nice liver male Shih Tzu as a family dog. Soon a female Shih Tzu owner by a client wanted to breed to my male. So we did and had a litter of 6. We did not take a puppy but took a stud fee instead. Shortly after the bitch was in need of a home so I purchased her.
The rest is kind of basic. We acquired another female through similar means. My vet was instrumental in my breeding knowledge and care for the pups. We delivered 2 litters a year for about 4 years. We retired all the dogs, fixed them and life went in another direction.
What makes your program special?
I'd like to say nothing makes it special...but that isn't the truth.
First...let's start before we even breed. We take her in to see her reproductive veterinarian for a full check up. This could include bloodwork, dental work, etc. If for any reason the Dr feels Willow shouldn’t be bred, we skip a heat.
Once she is bred, we begin giving her 400+ mg of DHA daily. This is proven to help develop puppies brains.
Next...I believe our way of handling the litter and the extra devotion we give to early learning and the Misty method sets breeders like us apart from others.
ENS, (early neurological stimulation)ESI,(early scent introduction), early problem solving and other early stimulation done correctly by breeders makes for a puppy who is easier to train...hence smarter puppies.
The Misty method is so you can potty train your puppy easier. This method begins at 3 weeks and continues until the puppy is 9 weeks. At this point the puppy should be on its way to house broken. ( There are always mistakes).🥰
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are liver white and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Olive
Olive is a super personality! She is a definite comedian!
Chief, dad
English Springer Spaniel
About Chief
Chief is an absolute dream of a goof! His parentage is outstanding with hunting deep in his genes. He is from the last of the frozen semen from SHURFIRE MAJOR WINSTON. That dog ran his trials in the western division. AFC and FC.
We were lucky enough to have purchased a female pup named Willow. Her father was from Doug’s kennel. Sho-Me Raz Ma Taz passed a few years ago. So Doug has a number of Males and breeding lines. Please look up Sho-Me Kennel in Kansas…Doug Rice. His dogs have won countless trials and some have become AKC champions in Agility!
Parent health testing
Breeder-Reported Testing
Good level
Desert Willow Kennel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for English Springer Spaniels.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
PRA3, Tibetan Terrier and Spaniel Type, DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
