I'm Janice K., the breeder behind Emerald City Poodles & Doodles located in Dothan, AL. My dogs are my family. They sit on our couch and sleep in our bed! Puppies are seen by our veterinarian their first week of life, and again before going to their new fur-ever homes. Vaccinated, dewormed, potty-pad trained & early life experiences (noises, grooming & socialization with other pets).
Q. & A. with Janice
Why did you start breeding?
I became interested in breeding after taking in a pregnant guinea pig. I even created a facebook page called "The Guinea Lady" where I shared proper care practices and tons and tons of photos/videos on proper enclosure setups. After moving to Alabama in 2022, I was introduced to the Holland Lop rabbit and started my own rabbitry called "Boonie's Bunnies," which I ended last year. Raising puppies has always been my dream, and now I have the breeding knowledge and understanding required to do so.
What makes your program special?
My pets are my whole world. My goal is for the puppies I raise to live exceptionally spoiled lives - as mine do. I do this by interviewing possible families about their past experience(s) raising both large and small breed dogs, their plans to spay/neuter & seek regular veterinary care, and (most importantly) why they are looking to add a new member to their family. I will always take back any pet that leaves my home to ensure they are properly placed with a new family & provide continuous support to families who choose to get their puppy from my program.
What are the different breed sizes in your program?
Our Poodle puppies are toy size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our Poodle puppies include sable, apricot, black, brown, cream, white, and brindle. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Dorothy
Temperament:
Dorothy is mellow, well mannered, and loves to cuddle. She does exceptionally well when being groomed & doesn't bark as much as other poodles. She only barks when she goes outside to greet the neighbors' dogs :)
She is an AMAZING mother. She stays fully vested in their young lives until they go home around 9 - 12 weeks. She teaches them patience, acceptable play, how to use their potty pad, and aids in their transition to solid puppy food.
Breed Information:
Dorothy's Great Grandmother was a Yorkie, and each generation after that was bred with 100% Poodle. This would classify Dorothy (4th generation) as F1bb on the Doodle chart if her DNA were to have at least 12.5% Yorkie, but it doesn't. This means that as puppies, Dorothy and her siblings were classified as "Poodle" because the Yorkie DNA is considered to be "bred out." That being said, Dorothy's puppies (when bred with 100% Poodle) are also classified as "Poodles." Whether you want to call Dorothy a Yorkipoo or Poodle, the resulting puppies will still be Poodles.
Breed Simplified:
F1bb + 100% Poodle = Poodle.
Poodle + Poodle = Poodle.
***Her puppies are unlikely to contain much, if any, Yorkie DNA and the qualities/traits inherited will be Poodle.
Q: But why does she look like a Yorkipoo then?
A: Her color is "Sable." Sable is a golden variation of the traditional black and brown. While sable coloring is more common in Yorkies, it is still rare. Rarer so for a poodle. As the pup grows up, the darker tips fade or disappear altogether as the ends are groomed off. If hair on the ears is not cut as frequently, or is left longer, the darker color will remain (still fading over time) in those areas.

Poodle
About Ozzy
Ozzy is spunk topped with a huge attitude! He loves to play, explore, cuddle close, and argue when he's told "no."
***He will only argue if the mood is light and playful. He knows this is unacceptable when the "no" is firm and direct.
He sleeps with me at night and follows me wherever I go. I definitely consider him a Velcro dog, but he does reluctantly stay put when told to do so. If he isn't in my lap, he's leaned up beside me - always touching. The only time he is away from me is when I'm either not home, or he's cuddling with Stella (my Great Pyrenees dog). They are besties.
He loves to please others and learns quickly. He is keen to my emotions and quick to apologize after he's caught being "naughty." His naughty behavior is often out of impulse, jumping back up on furniture after being told to get "off" or attempting to steal my snack wrappers right from under my nose! Being kept busy with training, exercise, and lots of individual attention is the only way to keep him in a calm/submissive state (common poodle behavior).
Ozzy can sense when I'm frazzled, upset, or on the verge of a panic attack. When this happens, he forces himself into my face and will bark at me until I pull him in, hold him close, take deep breaths and relax. I didn't train him to do this. He does it all on his own. That being said, his puppies will likely be naturals as therapy and service dogs (professional training is still recommended).

Breeder-Reported Testing
Good level
Emerald City Poodles & Doodles reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Companion Crosses.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
